When you consider how important angels are to the Biblical narrative, it is interesting how little they are mentioned in sermons and in church life. Perhaps the Reformation made us shy of them: perhaps the New Age nonsense of some is not helping. McKnight’s book is a passionate and thoughtful attempt to reclaim the idea and points out that belief in angels is very central to Christian thought. He gives us a tour through the biblical tradition and tries to apply that to the Church of today. It is not wholly successful, but it has made me think again that if we say in the Eucharist, ‘With angels and archangels we worship…’ then we ought to be better informed. If they were so important to the Incarnation, Old Testament prophecy and the early Church why aren’t they now?
