The prolific and talented author Rachel Mann has produced another intriguing book designed to promote Lenten discussions in online groups, and provoke individuals into deep and perhaps challenging reflection. Her earlier Lent course, From Now On, was based on the film, The Greatest Showman, but her latest offering, Still Standing, comes from a rather more controversial work, Rocketman, the film biography of Elton John. Although highly acclaimed, and nominated for numerous awards including Oscars and Baftas, the film portrays, literally, sex and drugs and rock and roll, with few if any links to a traditional Christian lifestyle. Perhaps that is the point, for we are reminded that Jesus said, ‘Those who are well have no need of a physician, but those who are sick’ (Mark 2.17). Certainly, this course challenges believers to consider the origins and implications of difficult relationships and human identity, the tension between worldly success and inner failure; and the nature of forgiveness. Ultimately it is about the Resurrection and standing before God. Rachel Mann uses clips from the film and cleverly relates these to biblical texts with questions designed to promote wide-ranging discussions, with the aim of stirring empathy rather than condemnation. This book is likely to succeed with young Christians, and will be popular with all who are fans of Elton John. If they approach it with an open mind, those who are more elderly and perhaps of a more conservative Christian persuasion will also find much to ponder and value.
