“The Makin report on John Smyth is difficult to read. The extent and severity of the abuse is considerable. Unfortunately, his position as a lay Reader will have given him extra credibility in many people’s eyes. It is a reminder to us that Christians – lay, ordained, licensed – are not above challenge. As LLMs / lay Readers, we must maintain our own safeguarding training and practice. However, it also reminds us that we need to be sensitive to disclosures made to us. Passing on a concern to the PSO, incumbent or Diocesan Safeguarding Team is neither causing problems nor judging others, but allows a wider discussion to happen by appropriately trained staff. In particular, the Diocesan Safeguarding Team often hold a bigger picture and can offer wisdom and advice. If the report has raised concerns or trauma for you, please speak to your PSO or incumbent. As we pray for victims of abuse, let us also pray that the Church of England becomes a safe place where people can thrive.”
