The apostle Paul definitely had a way with words, and an ability to speak volumes with a few well-chosen ones – as does Michael Thompson in this booklet subtitled ‘Paul’s Pastoral Strategy in 1 Corinthians’. The text focuses with some intensity on the importance and meanings of Paul’s first few verses of salutations to this troubled congregation, and his thanksgiving to God. The author concludes with a broad yet concise summary of the pastoral significance of each chapter. This booklet is a fantastic resource for background preparation for sermons, for in depth discussion in study groups, and not least personal reflection. There are searching questions for thought at the end of each chapter which take us from the personal to how Paul’s advice may benefit our own church situations. It is a good and challenging read at whatever level you take it, and there is plenty of material for further study.
