Rev Tony Ingleby is a retired Church of England priest whose ordained ministry in the dioceses of Exeter and Truro spanned 33 years. The appeal of his book is wide — drawing in those new to the psalms, as well as offering a challenge to others well acquainted with them. It consists of short informative reflections on each of the first fifty psalms, with the author’s own paraphrased versions created as beautiful poetic hymns with suggested tunes. For example, Psalm 1 begins The man who walks in innocence and is set to the tune of It came upon a midnight clear. Of course, the psalmist did not have the benefit of Jesus’ insight about loving one’s neighbour. Enemies were for slaying and defeating: definitely not for loving. The author’s notes are occasionally critical of the narrow and bloodthirsty tone, but he is skilled at placing this in context, and his hymnic paraphrases certainly do not wallow in the bloody and vengeful bits. This is a book for everyone who loves the psalms, and especially for those who love singing.
