Essential theology for the twenty-first century
Recognising that theology is for everyone, this book is primarily intended for ‘those who have, or hope to have, a teaching ministry in the church’ to help them engage people with theology, using the framework of the Kingdom of God. Suggesting what to teach rather than how to, Philps covers topics entitled Kingdom, Covenant, Cross, Commission, Character, Charism, Christology and New Creation. He acknowledges that his survey is not comprehensive, dealing only with issues that he has ‘had to think through’ in 35 years of parish ministry. In a relatively short book for the broad range of topics covered, each one is touched upon rather than explored in great depth. Each chapter is structured in brief headed sections. I found this further produced a somewhat sketchy feel overall but the teacherly style is conversational and readable and the author’s grounded ideas and reflections are by no means uninteresting. Seasoned Readers may not find much new here, but this book would be a useful addition to resources for guided study groups.
