Almost three years after his death, this is the essential Borg: a compelling collection of his writings and sermons which provides the core of his profoundly spiritual theology. For those who are new to Borg this is an ideal introduction; for ‘old hands’ the work is still valuable and refreshing, especially the sermons which have until now been relatively inaccessible. These typically summarise Borg’s thesis on the humanity and divinity of the historical Jesus: as a spirit-soaked charismatic healer; as wisdom teacher, ever taking the road ‘less-travelled’; and the missionary of compassion and social justice. Borg’s liberal theology will not appeal universally, and a few of his assertions will be questioned. For example, he seems to underestimate the historicity and spiritual value of John’s gospel, and similarly he undervalues the significance of the ‘Son of Man’ designations in the gospels. Nonetheless, every thinking Christian would gain from reading this beautiful anthology of Christian writing.
