A thoughtful analysis of one of Paul’s most significant letters
There are no half measures with Paul. When he wants to tell you something, he does so with all guns blazing. The Corinthians received the benefit of this to particular effect in the correspondence we now know as 2 Corinthians. Paul not only had to persuade his people of his points of view, he even had to establish his authenticity as an apostle. This he did from the depths of his spirit with all his characteristic directness: condemnation of imposters, professions of weakness and appeals for money. John Proctor describes all this with Pauline vigour, making a virtue of Paul’s directness, although he passes over the many sayings of Paul that trouble many modern Christians. One feels it would be fairer to Paul to say that he was a man of his time with some obsolete attitudes of the time, but that we love and respect him all the same.
